Canon summary
What Lies At The End/Of The Road/ (because I've seen translations that say both titles and they're both appropriate) is the story of two boys that die at the same moment, and one is given the body that survives, but the other takes the body that will die. Han Siwon, a victim of bullying and sexual abuse, commits suicide at the same time that Yoon Tae Min (or Taemin in most translations) is hit by a truck while crossing the road in another part of the city, just as his life is starting to improve after having been abandoned by his parents as a child. Ostensibly through Taemin's desire and will to live, combined with Siwon's desire to die, the boys' spirits are swapped into eachothers' bodies, forcing Taemin to then live in Siwon's body, and allowing Taemin's body to die with Siwon's spirit inside. After leaving the hospital, Taemin is forced to act like an amnesiac Siwon, because trying to explain the alternative is too "out there".

The wrench thrown into this plan is that Yoon Taemin has a friend in his past that has reappeared now that he's taken over Siwon's life: Min Siwoon, known to him as Min Woojin. As a little boy Taemin was Woojin's protector and often savior, and inspired hero worship from the boy as he was bullied by everyone around him and abused by his mother (HMM THEMATIC MUCH). Taemin's reappearance in Siwon's body, and his failure to behave as Siwon might (aka his inability to just sit and take the blackmail and bullying), prompts Siwoon to force himself into Siwon's life, with the assurance that he knows that it's Taemin in there. With Min Woojin on his side and his little posse of hangers-on making his life hectic, Taemin has to learn how to fend for himself while dealing with the problems from the end of Siwon's life, including the bullies that destroyed Siwon's will to live, up to and including his own twin brother.

THE CANON DIVERGENCE
This account is played both as Yoon Taemin pre-accident, and as Han Siwon post-accident, as if Taemin's body hadn't died with him inside. Thus, Han Siwon was forced to take on Taemin's life as much as possible, in spite of having a totally different background that would never have prepared him for constant hard labor and no prospects thanks to a lack of formal education.
